It’s Valentines Day; Love is in the air, there are sunshine, flowers, and tutus everywhere! Actually, tutus aren’t just for ballerinas and Valentines Day, but for birthdays and Christmas and all year around. I’ve seen these tutus all over Etsy and the rest of the internet for incredible prices, but did you know you can make your own for less than $5? It’s really simple, so today I’m going to show you how to make your own tutus for any celebration, for just $5.
What You’ll Need
All you need is a little bit of braided elastic, and two small rolls of tulle. Find about five minutes and you’ll have your very own tutu in no time! So let’s get started, shall we?
- 20 yards of Polka Dot Flocked Tulle (or plain tulle, just make sure it comes on a 6″ roll) for a 0-6 month old, (I would suggest 30 yards for 6-12 months)
- Braided Elastic
Making the Waistband
First, using the elastic, measure around your wee one’s waste. Add about 2 inches and cut the elastic to size.
Tie a small knot in the end (Note: this knot will be hidden when you are all finished!).
Taking a piece of tulle, measure from your child’s waistline to a little bit below the knee. Double that length, and cut with scissors.
Continue cutting that length from the role until you have a nice pile of tulle (I used two rolls).
Take one piece of tulle and fold it in half. Place the folded center under the elastic band…
…and pull the loose ends through the loop.
Hold tightly onto the elastic and pull until the tulle is tight.
That’s all there is to it! Continue this technique around the waist band, when you come to the knot in the elastic hide the knot in the loop created by the tulle. When you’ve packed in as much tulle as you can, tug gently on each loop and distribute evenly along the elastic.
Trim any long pieces or jagged edges and then get that tutu on your sweet baby! Now it’s time for pictures and sharing on social media. Be sure to share your creations with me on Facebook or Instagram, I love to see what you come up with!
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I love this and have bought the tulle to make for my new granddaughter! Thank you for sharing!
I am interested too to know where you got the appliqués design on the onsie. Could you please share so I can go buy it to put on the onsie I I want to put with it?
Thank you so much! Love your quilts too!
Cindi
Thank you for your kind words, Cindi!
I actually purchased that onesie from Carters a while back, but I will say that I’ve seen some equally adorable patches at Hobby Lobby!
Glad to see your little dancer all “decked out” in her finest gear. So cute. She is beautiful.
Thank you – it’s so fun and easy to do little projects like this!
