It’s everybody’s favorite; whether you are, want to be someday, or were once pregnant, everyone wants to see what the top baby nursery trends are for 2016! Trends always seem to blend into each other, but the difference from, say, 2014 nursery trends to 2016 nursery trends is a pretty stark contrast. Let me tell you, there are some lovely ideas, and inspirations coming your way!

2016 Nursery Colors
The colors for 2016 are no surprise. Taking a cue from the Pantone Colors of the Year, pastels are in again! If you’re having a girl, but aren’t quite into pink-girly-girl, try blush, and for boys a nice light shade of aqua or celery green hits the nail on the head!
First it was gold, then copper, now it’s popular to mix a variety of metallics into your nursery. I personally think that rose gold will get increasingly popular over the next year, assuming that enough product designers hop on the bandwagon! Mercury glass will be another popular metallic that you can add to glass on your own with a simple tutorial! Check out Take The Side Street’s Tutorial. I did it and and thrilled with the results!
2016 Nursery Themes
It’s not always cool to have a themed room, but this year themed nurseries are very cool. Anything having to do with travel is hot right now: airplanes, maps, hot air balloons, nautical, and globes galore! I’ve even been dreaming about a travel-inspired nursery for my someday-nursery, proving that I’m just one of the many easily-influenced consumers!
Along with travel comes the wide open sky! Decals and other sky-inspired images and patterns are all over the place right now. The big motifs are clouds, sun, moon, and stars. For some really adorable inspiration, check out my You are My Sunshine Baby Shower!
Another travel-inspired theme to keep your eye on is the Southwest. Aztec inspiration is huge right now; bold pops of geometric pattern, dream-catchers, feathers, and of course, tee-pees are perfect for your little explorer!
A staple baby boy nursery theme is the construction theme! What little guy won’t love the bright colors and moving parts of a nursery theme like that?! My Building Blocks Construction Quilt is the perfect mix of sophisticated and fun for your little baby boy! Visit my shop to pick up a pattern for yourself!
2016 Nursery Styles
Not into themes and just want to stick with a classic style? Never fear! There are lots of trendy interior design styles for your nursery this year. The big contenders are bohemian and traditional…yes, the two most opposite styles I could think of.
Bohemian Nurseries
Along the same lines as the nursery themes for this year feathers, dream catchers, mixed and matched patterns are all the rage. An additional surprise element: Granny Chic. Unfortunately, I can’t claim credit for the name “Granny Chic,” though I wish I could. It’s pretty fabulous. Incorporating lace, afghans, and other sweet details is gaining steam in nurseries all over the world. It’s just a little bit of handmade love and care that every nursery needs. Higher shelving would be a lovely place to stack antique linens and even some transparent colored glass, like depression glass!
Traditional Nurseries
A sleek and sophisticated baby room has been a growing trend over the past two or so years. By incorporating living room furniture that has classic elements, such as tufting or even leather, you’re well on your way to created a classy nursery that any adult would feel at home in!
Modern or Mid-Century Nurseries
Modern and Mid-Century Nurseries are something that I think might be starting to phase out as far as trends go, but the timelessness of these styles assures that they will always be pretty popular. Clean lines and minimal clutter is the way to go for this look. There’s lots of great blog posts about what you really don’t need for baby, which I would definitely suggest if you’re going for this look.
Textures in the Nursery
I’m a big supporter or making every environment a learning environment for children. The nursery is the most important place to incorporate this idea since it’s where your sweet bundle of joy will spend the most time! I have a great post about Creating a Learning Environment in the Classroom, but the same ideas carry over flawlessly into children’s bedrooms. It’s quite helpful that texture and natural materials are ever-so-trendy right now! Incorporate reclaimed wood accents, natural woven rugs, and other textures into your babe’s room for a current and engaging space.
Another great place to add some curiosity and interest into your nursery is through lighting. Lighting is the perfect accessory for every room’s outfit, and your baby will spend hours staring at it, whether it’s a late night feeding or laying on their backs staring at the ceiling, give them something interesting to look at!
All Eyes Are On You, Baby!
Some years it’s an accent wall with wallpaper, board-and-batten, chalkboard paint, a fabulous textile, a giant window—there’s always something that takes center stage. This year it’s the crib. The main splurge in most nurseries is the crib, so it might as well be fabulous! For a trendy nursery this year, make sure that the crib is the star of the show.
What are you seeing out there for nurseries that you love this year? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments below!
