Month 12 | Finishing the Quilt

We are finally here! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?

This month is the one we’ve all been looking forward to – the finish!

I will say that this month is a little more labor-intensive, but think of it as the final push at the end of a year-long run…

…Rome wasn’t built in a day and this quilt won’t be built in a night!

Ready to finish this thing!? Let’s get going!

Get Set…

Supplies for the month

This month we’ll be piecing rows and borders, but also returning to the appliqué skills that we learned in the beginning of the year:

  • Freezer Paper
  • Monofilament Thread
  • Elmer’s Disappearing Purple Glue Stick
  • That Purple Thang
  • Stabilizer (and lots of it!)

Cutting and Piecing Borders

Cutting this month is short and sweet. We’ll start by piecing our borders and getting them all ready to go when we need them!

Creating the Quilt Center

This isn’t your standard finish – we can’t just put the blocks together into rows and call it a day! Make sure that you pay careful attention to how we piece the quilt center.

Bias Tape Appliqué

Ready to create the show stopping border? What about some runaway twine? We’ll return to month 1 and use bias tape appliqué to make these vines really come to life:

Chapter 4 | Turned Appliqué

We are getting so close – I can almost taste the victory! It’s time to turn under the edges of your leaves and settle in for a night of stitching.

Turned Appliqué is time consuming but oh-so-worth-it! Check out this refresher video to get started:

Chapter 5 | FINISHING THE QUILT!!

Ah! We are finally here! An excited word from me in your moment of victory:

The quilting on my quilt is an edge-to-edge design created by Karlee and longarmed by Cindy Carey of North Star Longarm Quilting. I highly recommend the quilting services and designs from both of these ladies!

Edge to Edge

If you’re going with an edge to edge design, I’d suggest taking a look at Karlee’s incredible selection of designs. I have spent HOURS scrolling through these unique beauties and know you’ll find something you love! If your longarmer doesn’t happen to have these designs on file, they are generally happy to purchase the design and add it to their library. Just make sure to ask if this is an option before getting attached to something you love!

I chose to go with a very large scale pattern that included lots of different imagery…something that felt very natural I think the large scale really worked well to balance the interest of the quilt top without taking over.

Custom

Now, I am not about to claim that I am anything more than a humble piecer. The quliting part of quilting is something that I have yet to master. BUT there are so many classes out there for free-motion quilting, so why not try one?!

I know, I know… they are not all created equal. But if you’re going to take just one class this year, then Graffiti Quilting by Karlee Porter is the one to choose! I’m really hoping that I can carve out the time to learn this incredible skill and take this amazing course!

In this expanded online course, Karlee explains her creative process in a very down to earth kind of way anyone can follow. From the beginning novice to the advanced professional, Karlee breaks things down and builds them back up in a way that every single skill level can catch the wave and level up their skills.
