Starlit Path | Modern By the Yard

Have you ever played around with an old quilt block only to find that a modern look isn’t far off?

I had the pleasure of working with Benartex on their latest issue of Modern By the Yard. This eZine releases today and includes a block that I designed! Make sure you check out my block below and then pick up a copy to see the other awesome blocks by Heather Black and Chris Dodsley.

If you flip to the section titled “Modern With a Twist,” you’ll see a wild block that looks a little something like this:

This modern block was based on the Drunkard’s Path quilt block!

Drunkards Path is one of my favorite quilt blocks and was the design challenge for this issue of Modern By the Yard. For an old block it has a very modern design that catches my eye every time. To modernize this block, and create Starlit Path, I used the original design for the center of the block but made two significant changes: I used a curved template that allows for a larger, more flowing, quarter-circle in each block and added a third fabric. The combination of these changes creates a completely new picture. These curvy stars are perfect to light up the drunkards path!

I designed this quilt block using Amanda Murphy’s Free Motion Fantasy collection. I’ve been eyeing up these large swirly prints for a while and was so excited to use them in this project!

Starlit Path by Rachel Rossi

I’ve named this block Starlit Path, and I think it makes a pretty gorgeous quilt. It is consistent with my style that seems to tend towards very few fabric selections and really focuses on the block design.

I got a sneak peek of the other blocks in this issue, and you’re definitely going to want to check them out! Pick up a copy for yourself over at Benartex’s blog: Sew In Love {with fabric}

This pattern isn’t currently being offered in my shop, but if you love it, let me know in the comments below and I might just add it to my collection!
