The Little Book of Big Stitch Binding

The Official Launch

Today is the BIG day for my little book. I’m so very excited to officially present to you The Little Book of Big Stitch Binding.

This bite-sized pocket guide is the perfect companion for those of us who might not enjoy the binding process (ehem) as much as we could or are left longing for just a little something on the edges of our quilts.

Now. If you were at QuiltCon, you might have already gotten your hands on this beauty – that was our soft launch and you blew me out the of water! We sold out on the second morning of the show and spent the rest of the week taking orders!

What is Big Stitch Binding?

Big stitch binding is exactly what it sounds like! You’re using thick thread and visible stitches to secure and add a decorative touch to your quilt binding at the same time.

Unlike the invisible binding stitch, big stitch is meant to stand out and make your quilt that much more cozy and handmade.

I like to say that it’s one part embroidery, one part utility.

Does it Hold Up?

Yes!

I was a bit surprised myself, but yes, this binding technique does hold up to modern washing and drying.

I would suggest that if you expect to wash your quilt heavily, use a stitch that I graded as strong (yes, each stitch has a grade!)

If you’re adding this to a baby quilt (likely being washed far more than average), I’d suggest doing an invisible binding stitch and adding the big stitch as decoration after.

What Tools will I Need?

I will go over all of the must-haves and the nice-to-haves in the book, but rest assured, you can get into this technique for less than $50…and you probably have most of what you need already!

Take a look around the Big Stitch Shop to get it all and choose your Perle Cotton colors while you’re there!
