Today is going to be a short and sweet tutorial on how to hem curtains. It’s a simple job, but a lot of people don’t know how to hem! Once you know how to do this, you’ll have the freedom to get those curtains on clearance that are just a little too long, or something that you love that only comes in extra long! Supplies for Hemming:
Measure & Cut
First, hang the curtain on the rod, decide how long you want the curtain to be. Add 1.5 inches to the final measurement and mark with a sewing pin.
Take the curtain off the rod and lay it flat on the floor. Carefully fold your fabric along the line that you marked with your pin. Measure to keep the curtain the same length across the whole panel and pin.
Place the fold onto your ironing board & gently press. This will give you a crease so that you know where to cut. Place your scissors in the crease and cut along the panel.
Repeat on the remaining curtain panels if there is more than one.
Pressing
Place the raw edge of your curtain onto the ironing board. Using a ruler, fold the fabric toward the back of the curtain 1/2″. Press with the iron. Do this across the bottom of the panel.
Fold the fabric toward the back of the curtain again, but this time fold it 1″. Press with the iron and do this across the bottom of the panel.
Sewing
Place your curtain onto the sewing machine with the back side facing up. Sew along the edge of the fold across the panel. Use a straight stitch for this part.
