Sashiko, Faux-shiko

Now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over, it’s time for another video tutorial!

As many of you may already know, I’ll be teaching a class at The Old Country Store throughout the year. In class we’ll be learning about all the different feet that you can use on your Bernina Sewing Machine. It’s really incredible and I can’t wait to share all these awesome tricks with my students!

Note: Some of the links in this post may be affiliate links. This means that if you choose to click on these links and purchase through them, I will receive a small commission. The best part about affiliate links is that it doesn’t add to your cost and allows me to make free content available to you every week. Thanks for your support!

In our first class, we’ll be covering 3 feet. One of them is Foot #11, the Cordonnet Foot. This foot is marvelous for topstitching and doing some other fancy tricks, but my favorite is the Sashiko-look that you can get when you use it!

I thought I’d take the chance to both give you a little sneak peek of what we’ll be learning in class and a tutorial on how to create a Sashiko look without all the hand embroidery. So, what do you say?

What in the World is Sashiko?

Some of you may be reading this, wondering what in the world I’m talking about. So, I’ll give you a simple overview:

Sashiko is a style of Japanese embroidery. It’s gorgeous! It is traditionally done on a navy cotton fabric with white threads creating the design. In my tutorial, you’ll see lots of straight lines and grids, but traditionally, it shows off all sorts of beautiful curved motifs.

  1. Hey Rachel,
I somehow missed your first two videos last month, but this one is super. You’re a natural. Keep at it! Blessings!

  2. Lovely idea! I enjoy the hand stitched sashiko, but this is a great shortcut if needed. I have a couple of Singers. I’ll have to see if there’s a similar foot. Thanks!

  3. I enjoyed the video very much! I have done some sashiko by hand several years ago, but this is a perfectly acceptable substitute and so much quicker!
