FAQs
What is a quilted cardigan, and how is it different from a regular jacket?
A quilted cardigan, like one you can make with the Cozy Cascade pattern, combines the warmth and structure of a quilt with the soft, open-front silhouette of a sweater. Unlike heavy outdoor coats, this pattern is designed for layering. It offers a relaxed fit that’s polished enough for errands but comfortable enough for lounging, making it a versatile “house coat” or light outer layer. You’ll love it!
Can I use a pre-layered quilt or kantha cloth for this pattern?
The Cozy Cascade works beautifully with kantha cloth. I do not suggest pre-quilted fabric because the batting gets too bulky. For best results, use flannel inside of your “quilt sandwich” – it’ll give you a really nice drape. Because the instructions are written for quilters, you can also “quilt your own” fabric using standard quilting cotton and flannel before cutting your pattern pieces.
Do I need garment sewing experience to make this?
Not at all. I’ve stripped away the “garment jargon” and used plain-language instructions familiar to quilters. If you can sew a straight line and bind a quilt, you can sew the Cozy Cascade. The design features a comfortable, easy fit that is very forgiving for first-time garment makers.
What are the best fabrics for sewing a quilted coat?
For the best results, I recommend:
-
Exterior/Interior/Binding Fabric: I suggest 100% quilting cotton
-
Batting: I suggest flannel as the batting versions tend to get VERY warm. Flannel also seems to drape more naturally. If you insist on batting, use something thin like Warm & Natural.
Is this pattern size-inclusive?
Yes, the Cozy Cascade pattern includes a wide range of sizes from XS to 3XL. The relaxed, open-front shape and optional belt allow for easy adjustments to suit your preferred silhouette and comfort level.
Can I use pre-folded bias tape?
You sure can! This makes the whole process a LOT quicker – you’ll need about 6 packs to bind your sleeves and outer edges (assuming it’s a standard pack with 3 yards included).
